'STAR WARS' AT 40: THE SEARCH BEGINS...

Image: Robert Carlisle.

With Artoo freed of his restraining bolt and out into the dangerous night surroundings of the Jundland Wastes looking for Obi-Wan Kenobi, Luke and Threepio begin a dawn Landspeeder search, in a scene filmed against back projection at Elstree Studios utilising pre shot second unit Tunisian footage of the canyon they'd be arriving at when finally finding the droid. Shot during a July 1976 heatwave, with Mark Hamill and Anthony Daniels in the Landspeeder shell, the sequence was ultimately cut from the final movie after Lucas was unhappy with the finished footage- a part of the scene was later included on DVD in 2004 and Blu-ray in 2011.
