'STAR WARS' AT 40: BEWARE THE TIE FIGHTERS!

Held by an upright blue covered pole, a TIE fighter is filmed zooming towards camera, in this great and detailed image, which we assume is from the 1977 ILM filming for the original STAR WARS.

As Luke and Wedge score early kills against the TIEs, the enemy ships eradicate most of the thirty Rebel X-wings ships over the Death Star, until only a mere handful are left.

Filming a detonating TIE fighter not seen in the film.

Effects icon Dennis Muren talks about the original ILM model filming in this anniversary interview: http://www.starwars.com/news/i-knew-we-were-doing-something-different-dennis-muren-reflects-on-star-wars-a-new-hope
